17.03.2012 - NPR: Mike Daisey¡¯s theatrical piece on Foxconn workers¡¯ plight is mostly theatrics

Marketplace and This American Life have retracted their stories based on the work of Mike Daisey based on further reporting and the accounts of his translator. Daisey’s one man show relives his trip to Foxconn where he claims among other things, to have met “14 year olds, 13 year olds, even 12 year olds” who toiled in Apple’s sweatshops for multiple shifts at a time, and people deformed from working on Apple products.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Marketplace’s Rob Schmitz, who covers Asia for the news organization, didn’t believe what he’d heard – that Daisey was able to find all of this stuff on his first six day trip to China. He looked for Daisey’s translator, who Daisey conveniently lost the contact information for. When he found Cathy Lee (above), she had no knowledge of just about any of the information Daisey uses in his monologue.

It appears that much of Daisey’s show is fabricated from news events and stories that Apple and Foxconn have already documented.  To their credit, NPR were the ones who got to the bottom of the story.  Here’s the transcript of the Radio interview on This American Life:

Rob Schmitz: Cathy says you did not talk to workers who were poisoned with hexane.

Mike Daisey: That’s correct.Chanel iPhone 4 Cases

RS: So you lied about that? That wasn’t what you saw?Chanel iPhone 4S Cases

MD: I wouldn’t express it that way.

RS: How would you express it?

MD: I would say that I wanted to tell a story that captured the totality of my trip.Chanel iPhone 4 Case

Ira Glass: Did you meet workers like that? Or did you just read about the issue?Chanel iPhone 4S Case

MD: I met workers in, um, Hong Kong, going to Apple protests who had not been poisoned by hexane but had known people who had been, and it was a constant conversation among those workers.

IG: So you didn’t meet an actual worker who’d been poisoned by hexane.

MD: That’s correct.

Daisey was quick to respond via his blog where he wrote:

“This American Life” has raised questions about the adaptation of AGONY/ECSTASY we created for their program. Here is my response:

I stand by my work. My show is a theatrical piece whose goal is to create a human connection between our gorgeous devices and the brutal circumstances from which they emerge. It uses a combination of fact, memoir, and dramatic license to tell its story, and I believe it does so with integrity. Certainly, the comprehensive investigations undertaken by The New York Times and a number of labor rights groups to document conditions in electronics manufacturing would seem to bear this out.

What I do is not journalism. The tools of the theater are not the same as the tools of journalism. For this reason, I regret that I allowed THIS AMERICAN LIFE to air an excerpt from my monologue. THIS AMERICAN LIFE is essentially a journalistic - not a theatrical - enterprise, and as such it operates under a different set of rules and expectations. But this is my only regret. I am proud that my work seems to have sparked a growing storm of attention and concern over the often appalling conditions under which many of the high-tech products we love so much are assembled in China.

17.03.2012 - New iPad jailbroken within hours

That didn’t take long. Just hours after today’s launch of the new iPad, jailbreaker MuscleNerdhas posted (Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case) screenshots of what he claims is a jailbroken third-gen iPad. Don’t get too excited, MuscleNerd warns there is “still lots of work to do!”, which means the jailbreak is far from ready for prime time. There is “No ETA!”, but he provided the screenshots of Cydia running for proof its on the way. We’ll of course keep you updated as progress is made.

Over on the Dev-Team Blog, a new post notes, “it’s impossible to predict how or when these things turn out,” but highlights the progress made so far with iOS 5.1 and the possibility of jailbreaking the new iPad. Head past the break for the full breakdown:

We can confirm that the method used to jailbreak the iPad2 4 months ago (Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case) still works even in 5.1.  That means we’ll at least be able to get our foot in the door to get the required kernel dumps on the iPad3.  That’s an important step, but by no means is it the end of the story.

Those of you following @i0n1c may have noticed he’s already tweeted pictures of his iPad2 jailbroken at 5.1.  As far as we know, he’s using a method completely unrelated to the one mentioned above.  That would be great news!

We’ve also seen bits and pieces of an entirely different jailbreak method being investigated by someone close to the Cydia repo scene.

Don’t update your new iPad3 past whatever iOS it comes shipped with¡£Gucci iPhone 4 cases|Gucci iPhone 4S cases|Gucci iPhone 4 case|Gucci iPhone 4S case

By the way, it’s rare but entirely possible that some of you may find your iPad3 comes with an iOS version that’s not quite 5.1.  If you do, be sure to let us know

17.03.2012 - First shots from inside Apple¡¯s retail store inside Harrods

We told you yesterday that Harrods Apple Store within a store would officially be opening today at 10 AM to sell the new iPad. We first told you about the new store opening in Harrods’ famous London department store location back in January. The new store is located within the Harrods Technology department, and judging by the first image above, it appears to consist of the typical wood harvest tables displaying Apple products that we normally see in Apple’s retail stores. It also doesn’t appear to contain a Genius Bar, as we confirmed back in January, and is quite larger than Apple store-in-store locations we’ve seen before. We can’t see a lot of Apple signage in this image, but we’ll update when we get our hands on more.Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4 Cases

17.03.2012 - Yes, the new Verizon iPad works on AT&T 3G networks

With the introduction of the new LTE iPad on Verizon and AT&T, many were wondering whether or not AT&T’s 3G network would work on a new Verizon iPad. According to a poster over on theMac Rumors forums, popping your AT&T SIM card into the Verizon iPad’s micro-SIM slot appears to work just fine as long as you first adjust the AT&T APN carrier settings. 17.03.2012 - Construction begins on Apple¡¯s Maiden, North Carolina data center expansion

When Apple published its 2012 Facilities Report and Environmental Update we got some new details on its plans for the currently under construction Maiden, North Carolina iCloud data center. We reported then that Apple plans on building the largest end user–owned, onsite solar array in the US across the road from the data center, as well as the largest non-utility fuel cell in the country at 5-megawatts. Today Hickory Daily Record confirms construction on the main campus has officially begun.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

…this week, work has started on the main campus of the data center. Driving by the campus, you can actually see the structure from the road. That’s because part of the berm — an earthen wall — has been demolished as part of some type of construction… What type of construction taking place on the main campus is not clear. No one is talking, or seems to know.

While it’s unclear exactly what the new structure being built on the main campus is, there are a few options. First of all we know the 5-megawatt fuel cell will be built next to the main data center, and the new building could possibly house that installation. However, asHickoryDailyRecord pointed out, Maiden Town Manager Todd Herms said Apple originally planned to build two identical structures when it first began construction of its Maiden data center. Since Apple has only built one, the new building could be the second building of the main data center.Designer iPad 2 Case|Louis Vuitton iPad 2 Cases

The report noted Apple’s main contractor for data centers in area, Holder Construction, pulled zoning permits last week for a “tactical data center.” Another permit issued on Wednesday named 34 acres of the main data center campus. The current 500,000-square-foot building only occupies approximately 11.5 acres, so its possible the new building will be much larger than the current data center.  As we pointed out in our overhead shot of the data center pictured right (Thanks PilotJohn), the report also confirmed land is being cleared for construction of the solar farm being built across the road.Chanel iPad 2 Cases|Gucci iPad 2 Cases

Catawba County Economic Development Corp president Scott Millar told HDR Apple should be producing power with its new projects by October and finish construction by 2013. Apple said the new fuel cell installation will provide “40 million kWh of 24×7 baseload renewable energy” every year, while the 100-acre solar farm will provide 42 million kWh of clean, renewable over the same period. The company originally planned to spend $1 billion over nine-years at the location and hire approximately 50 employees. Millar said Apple hired 76 employees during the first year of operations.  It’s unclear whether the initial $1 billion investment takes these

17.03.2012 - Apple rejected this app because it is too much like Siri

The last we heard, Apple was working with developers of Siri alternatives such as True Knowledge, the developers behind “Evi,” to iron out similarities between the app and the iPhone 4S‘s flagship feature. Apple is quick to warn developers who are submitting Siri-like apps not to mimic native features of the OS. Apple wants an app’s features to remain “distinctly different from the iOS behaviors and interfaces to avoid causing user confusion.” Developer Sparkling Apps reached out to let us know Apple rejected its latest app submission called “Voice Answer,” with Apple telling the developer the Wolfram Alpha-powered alternative is “too similar to Siri.”Best iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 4 Case

Apple is not flat-out rejecting all Siri alternatives/competitors. Sparkling Apps already has an app called “Voice Ask” on the App Store that sits in the top charts of the Reference category. Evi remains on the App Store as well. However, the Voice Ask app employs the same True Knowledge database as Evi. While Apple did not offer a specific reason for why the app was rejected, it is possible that Apple is more inclined to reject Siri-like apps using Siri’s Wolfram Alpha knowledge base. Unsurprisingly, the developers decided to release Voice Answer as an Android-only app on Google Play. So why would you want a third-party Siri alternative anyway? There are a few features an app like Voice Answer, if Apple were to allow it, would provide that Siri does not.

First off, the app would run on all devices with iOS 4.2 and up. It also provides spoken answers, optional keyboard input, and configurable items stored in the app’s memory. According to the developer, Voice Answer’s “speech recognition works better than that of Siri, especially with foreign accents,” and the app includes a chatbot called “Eve” that you can teach answers. While most of these features are also baked into Evi, it is unclear exactly why Apple is working with some developers to coexist peacefully with Siri, and then flat-out rejecting others without discussion. It is clear that iOS users are interested in these apps. With the 99-cent-Evi sitting around 200,000 downloads shortly after release, and Siri currently limited to only the iPhone 4S, there is definitely a market for voice-powered assistants if Apple allows it. However, Apple’s reasoning is vague for allowing some Siri competitors and rejecting others. An excerpt from Apple’s rejection to Sparkling Apps and screenshots of the unreleased Voice Answer iOS app are below. Unfortunately, if you want to try the app, you will have to on an Android device for the time being:Burberry iPad 2 Cases|Chanel iPad 3 Case

As the Apple Store tries to come back up we’re starting to get some details including pricing for 4G iPads. On that note, you may be asking yourself which carrier to go on.  I’ve been testing AT&T and Verizon’s LTE for awhile now in NYC and AT&T’s is faster (probably because only a few Android users are using it so far).  However, that could change once the iPad hits the streets.  On the other hand, Verizon’s LTE network is more mature and available in many more cities currently.Gucci iPhone 4 Case|Gucci iPhone 4S Case

9.03.2012 - Universal and Fox movies blocked from iCloud on new Apple TV?

As we predicted, Apple quickly unveiled a refreshed Apple TV today at its media event in San Francisco before moving onto the new iPad. On top of 1080p video streaming, perhaps one of the biggest features of the device’s upgraded UI is the ability to access purchased movies stored in iCloud— just like with music and TV shows. A studio executive tells me that Apple does not have all six of the major studios on board. And here’s confirmation from a source with first-hand knowledge: News Corp.’s Fox and Comcast’s Universal aren’t in, because they have preexisting deals with Time Warner’s HBO that give the pay-TV service exclusive “windows.” (News Corp. also owns this Web site.)

AllthingsD said that means those who own “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” and many other Fox or Universal movies, will be out of luck— at least for now. HBO spokesperson Jeff Cusson told AllthingsD a solution could be coming soon:Best iPad 3 Cases

9.03.2012 - iPhoto maps may be a preview of Apple¡¯s own mapping service

It has become clear that Apple’s new iPhoto App is pulling mapping  tiles from Apple’s own mapping services. Take this tile for instance. While they aren’t particularly good looking, Apple is no longer using third party mapping services like Google’s which iPhoto has used in the past and Apple has generally relied on for its mapping information across all of its applications, both Mac and iOS.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

As Apple and Google continue to distance themselves from each other, Apple is clearly moving to bring its mapping needs in-house.

In fact, we’ve heard from a source within Google that Apple has NOT re-upped their mapping contract for 2013 and their current mapping contract ends toward the end of this year.  That means Apple could be moving all of its mapping data to this new format by the end of the year.

Apple has acquired three different mapping startups including Placebase,  C3 and Poly9 from which it is likely building its mapping services.  If you’ve seen what C3 can do, (videos below) you know that the above tile fits into the “you ain’t seen nothing yet” category.

9.03.2012 - AT&T vs. Verizon LTE smackdown! Tests from Yerba Buena today

We’ve tested AT&T vs. Verizon’s LTE  in NYC and our guy on the ground in San Francisco was able to test LTE at Yerba Buena today.  Results? AT&T smoked Verizon in a bunch of areas around the “new iPad” event.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Those are similar to the  results in NYC and we hear the same thing happens in Irvine, CA, for instance.

Why is this?  We have out theories.

  • One major reason is that Verizon’s network is already pretty full of Androids running 4G while AT&T has only released a handful of devices with LTE. (this might also be why Apple used AT&T LTE at the event today)  The story might change when the flood of iPads come crashing in (for both companies).Chanel iPhone 4 Cases|Chanel iPhone 4S Cases|Chanel iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4S Case
  • Also, AT&T’s step down is to HSPA+ which is a lot faster than Verizon’s EVDO so perhaps AT&T has some faster legacy backhaul in place.
  • In Verizon’s favor is that they’ve been running LTE for much longer (with some significant recent outages) than AT&T and they seem to do much better on those Consumer Reports customer satisfaction-type surveys (which usually also take voice quality into consideration).

The plans that Apple has in place would seem to favor AT&T as well, especially when you consider the 29,000 US Wifi hotspots.  At $30/month, you get 3GB from AT&T, 2GB from Verizon.

Verizon’s strong point has traditionally been its voice service over AT&T and perhaps one reason why in the past they’ve been able to charge a premium..  For data only, the playing field is a little more wide open, however.

9.03.2012 - The Justice Department probing Apple and five major US publishers over alleged price fixing of electronic books

Several of the parties have held talks to settle the antitrust case and head off a potentially damaging court battle. If successful, such a settlement could have wide-ranging repercussions for the industry, potentially leading to cheaper e-books for consumers. However, not every publisher is in settlement discussions.

At question: The so-called agency model where publishers freely set prices of their titles on Apple’s iBookstore, with the Cupertino company keeping 30 percent of the proceeds. The freedom to pick the price has led most, if not all, publishers to raise prices of e-books across the board as they feared customers would get accustomed to inexpensive $9.99 Kindle books from Amazon.

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch already gave a deposition to the Justice Department saying abandoning the agency model would allow a single party to achieve dominance in the marketplace, alluding to Amazon. According to the people familiar with the matter, the Justice Department believes that Apple and the publishers “acted in concert to raise prices across the industry, and is prepared to sue them for violating federal antitrust laws”.

Such a serious accusation might harm Apple and publishers so it’s conceivable they’ll do whatever it takes to avoid an antitrust lawsuit. Another issue is Apple’s iBooks contract that includes a clause precluding publishers from selling e-books to other parties at a cheaper rate. Publishers are also being scrutinized for their 2009 practice of “windowing” e-books for a limited time after the publication of the hardcover edition. Of course, Uncle Sam is following in the footsteps of the European Commission which last December launched an investigation determining whether Apple and five major e-book publishers have colluded to restrict competition in the market for e-books, thereby breaching EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices. The five European publishers being scrutinized by the Commission are:

Hachette Livre, a unit of France’s Lagardere Publishingl; Harper Collins, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s U.S.-based News Corp.; CBS Corp.’s Simon & Schuster; Penguin, owned by U.K. publishing house Pearson Group; and Germany’s Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck.

The European Commission will be examining the agency agreements Apple signed with e-book retailers which specify important terms of business, amongst which are price points and the retailer’s cut of the profit. The EU probe arrived after the Commission had conducted a raid of the offices of several e-book publishers in March of last year.
